LightBurn Laser Software Guide: Full Setup, Features, Device Configuration & Download (v1.2.04)

Table of Contents

1. What is LightBurn? Comprehensive Software Overview

LightBurn is the industry-standard layout, editing, and machine control software for laser cutters and engravers. Unlike basic controller plugins (such as RDWorks or LaserDRW), LightBurn combines a full-featured vector CAD design suite with advanced direct-to-controller hardware communication.

Core Capabilities:

  • Direct Controller Communication: Communicates directly with your laser without using third-party plugins.
  • Universal Multi-Format Vector & Bitmap Support: Imports AI, PDF, SVG, DXF, PLT, PNG, JPG, BMP, and GIF.
  • Advanced Layer Processing: Arrange, edit, and apply independent speed, power, pass count, cut order, dithering mode, and air-assist settings by layer color.
  • Full Hardware Controller Compatibility:
    • DSP Controllers: Ruida (RDC6442G, RDC6445G, RDC5121), Trocen (AWC708C, AWC7813, AWC7824), TopWisdom.
    • G-Code Controllers: GRBL, Smoothieware, Marlin, Cohesion3D, MakerBase.
    • Galvo Systems: EzCad2-compatible fiber and CO2 galvo marking lasers.

2. Supported Laser Machine Models & Controllers

3. Step-by-Step Installation & Configuration Guide (v1.2.04)

Step 1: Configure Windows hosts File

Before running the setup wizard, add the license server redirections to your local hosts file to maintain permanent offline activation:

  1. Navigate to: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\
  2. Open the hosts file using Notepad (Run as Administrator).
  3. Append the following routing lines at the very bottom:
    127.0.0.1 api.cryptlex.com
    127.0.0.1 raw.githubusercontent.com
    127.0.0.1 lightburnsoftware.github.io
  4. Save and close the file (ensure the file has no .txt extension).

Step 2: Install LightBurn v1.2.04 (x64)

  1. Double-click the installer: LightBurn.v1.2.04.x64_V2.exe.
  2. Follow the standard installation wizard (default directory: C:\Program Files\LightBurn\).
  3. When prompted for FTDI / CH340 / Ruida USB drivers at the end of installation, ensure Install FTDI Driver is checked.
  4. Complete the installation.

Step 3: Device Setup & Machine Pairing

  1. Connect your laser machine via USB cable or Ethernet LAN cable (192.168.1.100) and power on the machine.
  2. Launch LightBurn → In the Devices window, click Find My Laser.
  3. If connecting manually:
    • For Ruida CO2 machines: Select Ruida → Packet / USB → Enter bed dimensions (e.g. 1300 x 900 mm) → Set Rear-Right or Rear-Left origin.
    • For GRBL machines: Select GRBL → Serial/USB → Set COM Baud Rate (115200).

4. Top 5 Common Troubleshooting Faults & Fixes in LightBurn

1. “Disconnected” or Software Fails to Detect Laser Machine

Cause: FTDI virtual COM driver missing or Windows COM port number > COM9.
Fix: Open Windows Device Manager → Ports (COM & LPT) → Right-click USB Serial Port → Port Settings → Advanced → Change COM Port Number to COM2 or COM3.

2. “Frame or Movement Limit Exceeded (ALARM:2)”

Cause: Job coordinate origin is set outside the active physical workspace.
Fix: In the Laser control tab, change Start From from Absolute Coords to User Origin or Current Position. Place the laser head over the material and click the Origin button before framing.

3. Engraved Image Inverted, Mirrored, or Scrambled

Cause: Machine origin corner mismatch between LightBurn and machine hardware limit switches.
Fix: Go to Device Settings (Wrench Icon) → Change the Origin corner (Top-Left, Top-Right, Bottom-Left, Bottom-Right) until test jogging matches physical head movement.

4. Cutting Dimensions Scaled or Oval Circles

Cause: Motor step length / pulse equivalent calibration needed.
Fix: Go to Edit → Machine Settings → Calibrate Axis → Request 100mm test travel → Measure actual distance with a digital caliper → Click Calibrate to calculate the exact step pulse.

5. Laser Fails to Fire in Framing / Fire Button Inactive

Cause: Software Fire button safety lock or controller door interlock open.
Fix: Go to Device Settings → Toggle Enable laser fire button to ON → Set Fire Power to 1.0% ~ 2.0% for framing. Check chiller water alarm connection.
